acrylic on canvas, 12 x 9 inches
Synchronicity ... this is about as close as I can get to describing how this piece came together. And it all started this summer when my husband and I were in Maine. I found this mug with the owls and just had to buy it. The mug is signed on the bottom by Mara. It is a production mug but I still love it. You can read a bit more about Mara here.
As I purchased the mug I began getting ideas about a painting, so the process began.
I began picturing an owl being painted next to the mug and knew I needed to have an opportunity to photograph some owls. My chance came during Tamarack Wildlife and Education Center's open house this October when the volunteers had the owls outside on the glove for everyone to see. This is Jasper their newest educational owl.
Note: educational birds cannot be released back to the wild because of injuries. Jasper lost an eye do to a car hit so he became an educational bird and will live at Tamarack to educate children and adults.
Right before I photographed Jasper I received an invitation for a themed show called the Drinking Vessel. Now I really had to put this idea of a painting together. I located some books I had on Audubon and Thoreau then arranged them on my studio work space along with the mug and my glasses and photographed the still life arrangement. Next in photoshop I merged the owl image with my still life for the idea of the painting. I used black paper when I photographed the books and mug to help give me an idea of light and negative space.
Now even though I had the idea for the painting I was stuck for a title. I knew I didn't want anything owl related. So I posted the painting on facebook asking for help with the title. I never made any criteria to my friends and collectors. I just wanted the painting to speak to them and say what they thought. After several excellent suggestions I picked 'Colleagues' submitted by my friend Mary. What a perfect title that makes a connection on all levels!
