Below is the gallery of the progress. Can you see the changes being made?
With most of my Christmas preparations out of the way I'm able to get back in the studio briefly to start the next painting. After a couple of sketches I did a transfer of the drawing and I'm ready to pick colors and start painting. I love drawing Chickadees and this was from a photo I took a few weeks ago at Presque Isle State Park. I always work from my own photos unless a friend lets me use one of theirs. This is an 8 x 10 inch canvas and I'll be working in acrylics. Right now I'm thinking warm grey and beige tones since it was the end of Autumn.
Getting out to photograph birds is a big part of my studio work. I don't do it often enough and need to set a schedule. So far Tuesday mornings have been a good choice. This morning even though it was cloudy and had rained I set out for Presque Isle and Gull Point. Gull Point is the tip of our peninsula here on Lake Erie in PA. Several Snowy Owls showed up last year and a few this year. The parking lot was empty which meant it was not a good sign knowing no one was out at the point viewing the owls. I decided to take my chances and walk out the 3 miles to the point. There is a serene quality and feeling you get when it is just you and nature. As I approached the point I could see gulls but no owls and no people. My heart sank at first till I reached the observation deck and climbed part way up when I spotted my Snowy Owl perched on a tree trunk snag. I approach cautiously to take photos and observe. Just me and the owl looking at each other as time stood still. Pure magic! Love it when my gut says to go even when no one was around. My Christmas present to me. I'm happy! ( note: This snowy might be my next painting.)

About the artwork - Yellow-rump Warblers are common where I live in the winter and it is so nice to see them on Presque Isle during the winter and spring months. They stand out when you can spot their 'butter butt' as they are sometimes called. I love their grey to brown tones with the white around the eye. She looked vigilant to me and quite alert.
I plan on creating some more small pieces that will be ready to frame for the holidays. So be sure to check back or sign up to receive my blog posts via email.
